Some people may take subtle hints. Others need a slap upside the head.

I assume that by greed you mean that businesses will use it to become more profitable, and there are most instances of that. But there are instances where people are using open data to try to find solutions to social problems too.

The problem with the latter is funding, and access to enough data. So you can’t have one business (as a social enterprise) without the other (as a profit-driven enterprise), as one helps fund the other. Government also needs to get involved to ensure access to data (and possibly funding too, but I prefer self-sufficiency).

We all have to go through Maslow’s hierarchy until we reach self-acutalisation i suppose.

I agree. Like any other part of the business, a review of resource utilisation, effectiveness and efficiency need to be performed on an ongoing basis. What we see too often is that such a review is only performed an an annual basis in the form of an annual performance appraisal. This is hardly the way to manage employees well.

But that is only time that anyone takes stock of how well things are going, and that needs to change. Especially if you want to size your department effectively. You may find that some people are not pulling their weight and others pulling twice or three times the amount.

I turn them off completely. I sometimes leave them in another room. The aim is to avoid distractions even for a short period. If you have to go through the hassle of turning on the phone just to browse or check twitter, you may find that doing work is the easier option.
