Last year only a few technologies dominated the headlines, and quite likely to dominate the headlines again this year.

Happy New Year everyone.

Last year only a few technologies dominated the headlines, and quite likely to dominate the headlines again this year.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

As predicted last year, AI/ML dominated the headlines in 2017, and will likely do so again for 2018. We continue to make great strides in improving this technology and finding ways to implement in practice. In 2018 it will only get better and better, making it difficult to distinguish a machine from a real person.

Automation and Robotics

With AI/ML comes automation. Automation allows many of the mundane, routine tasks to be performed by a computer or robot, freeing people to do other things. However, many people take things further and believe that the robot will take over jobs completely.

The possibility of replacing human jobs exists. McKinsey predicts that automation could kill 73 million U.S. jobs by 2030, while Gartner predicts that Automation will render only 30% of the IT jobs in India relevant. Other researchers believe that more jobs will be created, but they will be lower paying jobs causing a shrinking middle class.

But all these fears did not stop progress on automation from happening, and more progress is expected in the upcoming year. We need to prepare for the next step, but what that is exactly is still up in the air. Some claim that creativity, critical thinking and empathy are skills required for the workforce of the future, while others think that the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) are. At this time, things are changing so quickly, it’s hard to go where the puck is going, but my money would be on STEM.

Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies

Bitcoin prices grew 900% in 2017 and there’s no stopping bitcoin now. It’s a bubble, we know it’s a bubble, but yet people can’t help but get into it.

I’m still hopeful for the Blockchain technology, and blockchain technologies such as Ethereum. We should focus less on the marketplace and more on making the technology better. That will enable a whole new level in the business and financial world.

Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) are one of the ways that businesses can be more efficient and productive, even in a recession.

As the recession looms across Trinidad and Tobago, and with much of the region still reeling from the effects of high debts, business owners, and their worker are understandably worried about what is in store for them.

While some businesses have decided to retrench workers to reduce expenses, this has the effect of also reducing production, which would erode revenues. The more creative companies have chosen instead to either make their businesses more efficient or are trying to figure out how they can increase their revenue streams.

Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) are one of the ways that businesses can go the latter route, which not only improves the business but improves production as well.

Here are some ways that ICT can help businesses.

It makes them more efficient

Technology can remove bottlenecks in processes by automating routine or monotonous tasks, which computers are good for. For example, getting approvals or having documents sent to persons for review, can be set-up in a document management system so that once something reaches one stage, it can automatically be sent to the next stage.

Helps you to measure progress and provide continuous improvement

By setting up processes in digital systems, you can measure its impact since you have an automated way to determine how long tasks take, or even how much it costs depending on the system. You can then determine which processes need improvement, and make small tests and check out the results quickly.

Process improvement need not be by leaps and bounds, but often by many little steps.

Improves relationships

Unclear communication is often the biggest issue preventing them from having a good customer service experience. Besides being used internally, automated systems can be used externally as well with customers, suppliers, or other stakeholders, allowing them visibility in areas that are important to them.

Where is my order?

What is the status of my refund?

Where’s my payment?

How are this month’s sales progressing?

All this information helps improves the relationships you have with people by reducing stress on them in trying to get the information they need. It also removes the stress from you by needing to provide that information every time they ask for it.

Keeping your customers happy will go a long way to not just improving sales, but ensuring longevity, especially in harsh times.

Empowers employees

Having automated systems means that there can be less micro-management as employees are now responsible for managing tasks assigned to them. There will be some culture changes involved, mostly by the managers, but you will reap great rewards.

In this new era, employees want autonomy and want to be more in control of their jobs. Implementing these systems, employees can have all that and stay productive while you can still be on top of things.

Better collaboration

Communication within teams is one of the major challenges in organisations. There are systems that assist in keeping conversations going within teams to address projects, tasks, or issues that come up. And because conversations are kept in a single place, it can always be referenced later for any clarifications.

These areas should be judgement free, allowing open and free communications. People will be unwilling to place their comments if they feel it would be used against them in some way.
In the end, better collaboration means greater productivity. And greater sharing of ideas means more innovation and inventiveness.

Opens new possibilities

New technology isn’t just about doing what you do better, faster and easier. It’s also about doing and producing new things.

Let’s face it, some businesses would not survive a recession, simply because the economic realities just would not have allowed them to, no matter how much improvements they made. What would be required is a change in the business model. IT can help change your business model and adapt to a new world.

For example, you may create an e-commerce site for your goods, but then later offer other vendors the capability to offer their goods on your site for a fee. Now you’re no longer a retail store, but a marketplace.

Technology does not just change businesses… it changes mindsets.

When is upgrading enterprise systems worth doing?

an old typewriter and a modern tablet

I’ll be honest and say that I’m not a big fan of the technology refresh. Perhaps it’s the anti-consumerism part of me that dislikes it.

I’m the one who will use something until it’s dying breath before I find something different, as long as it’s performing well enough for me to get the job done.

You can read some of my arguments against regular technology refreshes in my previous post.

But I do believe that technology refreshes are important in some instances.

The core network. Here, performance is important. And as services grow and become more complicated, it may require that the core be replaced. But this replacement should happen about every 10 years or more, and not every 3 as we will typically see in some enterprises.

Whatever we are replacing it with should be scalable and support growth for another 10 years.

The cost to support the old product exceeds the gains in keeping it. Like an old car, there comes a point where the time and money spent keeping it running exceeds the value you get in having it. The same goes for running some IT systems, mainly software.

For example, Windows Server 2003 support ends on July 14, 2015. After that date, Microsoft will no longer be supplying security updates for it, leaving businesses running critical applications on Server 2003 at risk. The business may not wish to upgrade their system for one reason or another, such as the applications only run on Server 2003, or the cost to upgrade is prohibitive. In order to keep that system running securely means that additional security mechanisms need to be put into place such as host firewalls and intrusion prevention systems.

After a while, the cost of those mechanisms may exceed the cost of upgrading.

The cost of not updating is much higher than the cost to update. This is ancillary to the previous point. For example, not implementing a security fix to a vulnerability can cause far more harm if an exploit is made available for that vulnerability and you are compromised.

I always recommend quickly reviewing security updates, testing it, and implementing it into production systems. But always ensure that the update applies to you. It makes no sense applying a patch for IIS or Apache when you run neither of those systems.

The cost of updating is negligible. Cost here implies the cost to purchase an update, the labour involved, and the cost of switching (users should not have to be trained in the new system, nor should there be any changes that would affect the workflow).

This only happens with minor updates for bug fixes. And even then, there may be a cost. Microsoft has been known to roll out security updates that cause more harm than good. So always test your updates.

There are significant and quick gains to be realised in updating. And I do mean that the gains should be significant and quick. This is because there are many costs to updating that we may not know beforehand, such as licensing, training, hardware or software requirements, or bandwidth requirements for instance. These costs add up and erode away at the expected gains of the update leaving you with a bad taste in your mouth.

The gains should also be quick, within 6 months to a year I would say. This is because the longer the return on investment is projected, the more likely it is that those hidden costs may show it’s head.

For example, you may replace the old IP Telephony system that you have with a new system because the maintenance and capital costs are lower and the projected ROI is 3 years. But what you didn’t realise was that the licensing costs for new users or additional features that you want to implement was much higher than that of the old system, meaning, at the end you paid more for the new system, including the training you had to put your staff through.

However, if you replaced the old IPT system with a new IPT system by the same vendor (trade-in for new) because this one has a built in contact centre software and cloud-based management and connectivity allowing users to connect softphone wherever they are without a VPN at no cost, allowing you to recoup your investment within 6 months, then it may well be worth it, as long as subscription costs are reasonable, and you can cancel at any time.

Always do you due diligence to ensure you are getting your money’s worth.

Final thoughts

I still run Microsoft Office 2007. There is absolutely no reason for me to upgrade. I can still open office documents from newer versions (as I should be allowed to) and there are no features to entice me to update.

However when the new Microsoft Windows 10 comes up, I will upgrade my Windows 7 PCs since the update will be free. The operating system uses fewer resources allowing me to take more advantage of the hardware I have, and I can implement new security features like BitLocker to encrypt my drive. That is worth it.

The blind requirement to refresh systems should be a thing of the past. If we wish to run a sustainable business and an environmentally conscious world, then we must find a way to take the most advantage of what we have.

We are living in a world of consumerism, where the economy is based on consumers constantly buying the latest and greatest. But the world needs to change that mindset and try its best to make the most of what it’s given.

I hope that this series of posts has given some food for thought in how you approach technology refresh and has helped you somehow.

What are your views of technology refreshes?

Some businesses regularly update enterprise systems. Is this a good practice?

Upgrade on Pocket Watch Face with Close View of Watch Mechanism. Time Concept. Vintage Effect.

Over the past month or so, I’ve been looking for a used vehicle to buy to complement my other vehicle, since between my wife and I, one vehicle has not been enough.

There are so many vehicles being sold after being owned for as little as a year. Many more after three years.

I couldn’t help but notice the similarity to what we in IT call the “technology refresh”. This is where old hardware is changed, to newer ones, after reaching its “end-of-life”. I often wonder why we call it end-of-life, since the device may be still alive and kicking, and posing no problems whatsoever.

The question arises: Is a technology refresh necessary?

The main arguments for the technology refresh are:

The device has reached end-of-life, which could mean that it’s no longer being sold or it will no longer be supported. Therefore, you will not be able to get replacement parts for it, or support if anything goes wrong.

There may be new features available on new devices that you can now take advantage of.

You need to ensure that the network is highly available so by using newer hardware, you can improve availability.

Performance limits on older hardware stifles growth and newer hardware would improve it.

Let’s look at some of these arguments.

If a device has reached end-of-life, it does not mean that it’s not supported as a vendor may support a product long after this date. Nor does it mean that you can’t get a replacement if necessary.

I would advise that you purchase a few spares so that you can replace devices if anything goes wrong. When you replace those spares, purchase newer devices, checking to ensure that there are no compatibility issues, which would then replace other devices that malfunction. Spares should be an important part of any business that wants to ensure availability.

If there are new features available, are you going to use it? You can find out those features before purchasing and determine if there is a need for it. Don’t purchase something simply because there may be a need for it in the future.

I’ve seen many businesses purchase newer equipment to replace older ones, and they’re configured exactly the same. No changes whatsoever, so there’s no difference between the two.

There is some truth to the failure of devices the older they become. There is a figure called the “Mean Time Before Failure” or MTBF for short. This is a probabilistic number that indicates the average run-time of a device before it may fail, or the average time between failures. I’ve seen devices fail within days of being installed, and some devices that have been running for more than 10 years. Proper maintenance often improves the lifetime of a product.

Purchasing spares would improve availability by ensuring that failed devices can be replaced quickly.

Newer devices would typically offer better performance once you are replacing a device with the vendor’s updated part. But do you need better performance?

Many businesses do not monitor or analyse their network performance to determine whether they are under or over capacity. They generally go with the feeling of the “network being slow” or whether users complain about the same. Then wonder why little has changed when switches or routers are replaced.

Slow performance may be due to the network, or to the applications, or servers running the applications, or clients accessing the application, or just people having different perceptions. Unless you are monitoring the performance of your network, it’s difficult to prove whether things are getting better, worse, or unchanged, and where it’s happening.

So are there reasons to do a technology refresh? Yes, I do agree that there are some, which I discuss in my next post.

Original article: <a href="https://www.interxect.com/the-technology-refresh-is-it-necessary/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to 'The Technology Refresh: Is it necessary? A look at some of the arguments for regularly upgrading enterprise systems'">The Technology Refresh: Is it necessary? A look at some of the arguments for regularly upgrading enterprise systems
©2025 Interxect Services Limited. They were able to check if the book was available and if any of the other branches had it, which they didn’t. I really wanted the book so I called another well-known bookstore and inquired the same, to which they replied that they had none at the branch. When I asked if they had it at any of the other branches, the reply was, “Well you can call them to find out.”

Now the reply was pleasant and not at all discourteous, but did you really expect me to call around to find out if they had the book? I do try to shop locally and support the local business community, but the world has gone global and businesses should make it easy for their customers to do business with them.

Why was one bookstore able to tell me definitively if they had the book anywhere, nationwide, but the other couldn’t? It’s simple, they had a point-of-sale system that allowed them to do that.

The SME Advantage

Many small to medium businesses (or SMEs) have not taken advantage of the Information Technology advances that exists, for reasons such as cost, lack of expertise, or they are simply ignorant of what is out there. That’s a shame because the small business is in a better position to exploit the advantages of the new technologies than larger businesses.

The advantages that an SME has over a large business:

They can make decisions faster, and adapt quicker to changes and new technologies.

The adoption of new technologies is easier because of the smaller workforce and closer involvement of team members.

Success is crucial resulting in the business owner taking ownership of project outcomes rather than delegating it to others who may have lesser interest.

IT can allow SMEs to run faster, run cheaper, and run stronger, but these businesses need to move away from viewing only the capital investment required and think about the long-term returns.

Some ways that IT can help small businesses:

Manage your accounting such as expenses, revenues, assets, payroll and cash flow. Using reporting and analysis, you can get better insights from financial data beyond the “bottom-line”.

Track service provision to customers including warranties and performance. Track the time taken to perform service jobs, and the performance of individuals performing those jobs. You can increase your customer satisfaction, customer loyalty and renewals by taking a proactive approach to servicing.

Manage and track inventory so that you can determine how much inventory is costing you, the turnaround of items so that you can order only the best performing ones, and even the locations where items may have higher demands so you can allocate your inventory accordingly.

Measure the productivity of your operations by using metrics such as time to complete individual processes, the costs of those processes and how much resources it takes. You can use this data to then make business decisions as to whether processes can be improved or even eliminated to improve the business’ overall productivity.

Improve collaboration within the business, with vendors, and your customers.

Manage your employee information such as time and attendance, vacations, and their job objectives and work performance.

Will these cost money to acquire and implement? Yes, it will, but what is the cost of not implementing it?

The Opportunity Cost

Let’s say to purchase and setup a small business accounting software might cost around $500. However, the productivity gains you made by getting information quickly to pay taxes and knowing and following up with your account receivables saved you $1,000 over three years, plus the insight gained into you best performing services or items improved your profitability by another $1,000.

By not implementing the software, you’ve lost $1,500 over the three years.

This is what economists call the opportunity cost – the cost of an alternative that must be forgone in order to pursue a certain action.

In the long-run, you can be better off by implementing new IT systems to automate your work processes. It may be hard to put out that initial $500, but you’d have turned that investment into $2000; a 300% return on your investment over three years. What other investment is giving you such returns?

This is why I say that businesses should be thinking about the long-term returns rather than that initial capital cost.

Making the Choice to Invest in IT

All of this is not to say that you should run off and implement everything under the sun. What you should do is to first understand where your business is now, then determine where where you would like it to be and start figuring out how ways that IT can get you there.

That last step is not easy for everyone (and not as simple as I’ve put it), but it can and has been done.

So are you ready to invest in growing your business?

In a world where there is a never ceasing list of things to be done, perhaps technology can help you to tame the beast that is the To Do List!

I’m consistently distracted.

I often think that I have ADHD, but I’ve been assured that I don’t; I am just poor at managing my distractions.

Being within IT, I tend to use technology to help address issues. As such, I have looked to apps to help my manage my tasks and get things done.

Here is a list of apps that I use consistently to help keep me productive and focused. Perhaps it may help you too.

Evernote

Evernote is the best of the best when it comes to note taking apps (for me at least). While others swear by Microsoft’s OneNote (which is now free by the way, just to compete with Evernote), I’ve used Evernote since they first came out, and have been a premium user for two years now. No other app allows me to capture every idea or note that comes to my head, websites that I thought made good reference material, receipts, hand written notes, or whatever else that I want to remember. I can tag notes, place them in virtual notebooks and have them handy wherever I am.

You can check them out here – Evernote Website. Or if you want to sign up, you can use this link to get one month of premium free – my Evernote referral.

ToDoist

I’ll admit that ToDoist is not the first task list manager (otherwise known as a To Do list) that I’ve used. I’ve tried countless others – Remember the Milk (RTM), Wunderlist, Toodledo, Google Tasks, Any.Do – but they never worked quite well for me. (The one exception was one that I truly liked, Astrid, which was acquihired and shuttered by Yahoo! Thanks a heap Yahoo!)

Anyway, I stuck with ToDoist because of the ease of use and intuitive interface, on both the web and mobile apps. RTM’s capabilities exceeds ToDoist, but the terrible web app made it a pain to use and the mobile app, while much better, didn’t help as I use my desktop more.

ToDoist allows me to put the tasks that need to get done. As I check them off, I can see my Karma score go up or down depending on my productivity for the day. Karma is a tracking system that ToDoist uses to gamify the experience so you can see how well you are doing with your tasks.

You can check out ToDoist here – ToDoist Website.

Trello

I first tried Trello as a task manager, but then I realised that it’s not meant for that, but for Project Management. While Trello puts itself as a project management application, I don’t see it handling large projects well. But what it can handle is projects with well defined steps. I use Trello for ideation and writing. For example for writing, I have a board with five lists – Ideas, Researching, In progress, Editing and Published. Almost every article that I write goes through that process, especially the ones that require some research.

You can check out Trello here – my Trello recommendation.

Zapier

Zapier helps connect your web apps together so that one activity on one web app can set off an activity on another web app (what Zapier calls a zap). So I have a zap that when I create a reminder in Evernote, it automatically creates a task in ToDoist. I have another that when I create a new idea in Trello, it creates a task in ToDoist as well.

I only recently discovered Zapier and I’m still playing around and fine tuning some things, but it has lots of potential for automating your life.

You can check out Zapier here – my Zapier referral.

Cold Turkey

There’s one app that I want to mention that is not a web app at all. In fact it’s not an online service.

As I mentioned, I get easily distracted, and when you have the likes of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn around, it’s easy to find yourself there during the day, especially if you work on your computer a lot.

Cold Turkey is a free, open source application that you install on Windows PCs to block certain websites and applications during blocks of time that you specify, so that you can concentrate on your work. It’s difficult to bypass, and you can’t unblock time until the block of time you have specified has passed. You can’t even uninstall it once you’re still in a blocked time.

I’ve used Cold Turkey with some great success so far and recommend it. But a warning first: don’t do like me and block off the entire week in one go (unless that’s your plan). I didn’t understand what a block period was, and had to do without any social media for an entire week. And what a productive week that was.

Get it here – Cold Turkey Website.

What to do next…

Go and sign up for the tools that I’ve mentioned and give them a try, but one at a time. It does no justice trying all at the same time.

It’s also important that any tool you use shouldn’t bog you down, so if after using any for a week, you haven’t gotten a hang of it, then abandon it. Either look at alternatives (which may include other apps, or non-technology items like pen and paper, or a string around your finger), or come back another time when you may have more time.

The outcome you are looking for is increased productivity. If you’re not finding that, then there’s no sense proceeding.

If you would like further advice on how you may use any of the apps I’ve mentioned, or if you have tips of your own, please add it to the comment section below and contribute to the discussion.

To your productivity…

Have you set your goals for IT? Here are 3 questions to help set better goals for 2014.

The new year has rolled around again, and most people have gone through their annual tradition of making New Year’s resolutions, and goal setting for the year ahead.

Most businesses and departments would have already gone through their goal setting exercises already (at least those with a financial year ending in December), but that doesn’t mean that you can’t review your goals for the year and make adjustments.

Have you set the right goals?

I’m not going to go through setting IT goals, but just offer a few tips on ensuring that better goals are set. I’ll do this by asking three questions.

Do they integrate with the business goals?

I use the word ‘integrate’ over the word ‘align’ as the latter implies that IT is separate and apart from the business, when it should not be so. Business and IT goals go hand-in-hand, as IT not only helps the business achieves its goals, but also to create new goals to achieve.

Have your spoken to your stakeholders and executives?

Have you suitably educated them on what they can reasonably achieve with existing technology

Have you used new technology to influence the business goals?

Have you showed them what else they can achieve by using new technology?

Have you taken account of the existing business goals?

Not all goals may be IT related, but IT may nonetheless help.

What about employees?

Have you taken account of your employee goals? Employees that find meaning and purpose in their jobs perform better.

Have you collaborated with your employees? Employee engagement helps improve productivity, quality of work, quality of health and reduce turnover

Are they SMART?

You’ve probably heard about SMART goals before, all businesses have. Yet, we still have goals such as “improve customer satisfaction”. SMART goals are more than just a hype, it is way of setting better goals and objectives.

Your goals should be:

Specific

The goal should be as specific as possible. For example we can set a goal that “80% of customers choose a rating of 4 and above on a scale of 5 as to how satisfied they are with our service.”

I would suggest finding the root cause of customer dissatisfaction and creating smaller, more specific goals towards reducing those causes, but I won’t go into that for the purpose of this example.

Measurable

We should be able to measure the goal. In this case we would have a survey at the end of every service to determine what their satisfaction is with the service.

Attainable

Can the goal be attained or achieved? Do you know what small steps you can take to reach it?

Improving customer satisfaction may not be possible if the problem is that sales consistently give customers the wrong information, or if the technical issues are due to limitations of the systems being used.

Realistic and Relevant

Is the goal realistic? For example, current customer satisfaction is 20%, can we realistically expect a jump to 80%? The optimist may say yes, the realist says no.

Also, is the goal relevant? If IT has no impact on external customer satisfaction, then why is that goal there to begin with?

Time-Bound

Goals should be given a time for completion. Improve customer satisfaction to 80% by when? End of the year? Six months? It needs to be stated. Of course, that time frame should also be attainable and realistic.

What not to do?

I can’t say (or rather won’t say) what your goals should be for this year, but I would give some tips on what not to do.

Buy technology because it’s shiny and new

Don’t fall for the hype that analysts and tech journalists put out there. Always do a proper analysis first and decide whether such technology is suitable for your business.

Believe vendors when they say that you need something

I’ve seen this many times. Most businesses depend on vendors to provide them with truthful and accurate information, but this is sometimes not the case. Vendors usually have their own interest in mind, and sometimes let that conflict gets in the way of their best judgment. Review the information on your own and do your own research that you may make a more educated decision.

Not invest in training and continuous improvement

In tough economies, and slow growth, many businesses cut back on expenses, with training being one of the first to grow. I’ve always thought this contradictory thinking. How can you grow your business if you don’t grow the capabilities of your people? Grow your intellect and grow your people, and the business will grow

Plus you will learn what new goals to add for next year.

Big data may be reaching into the ‘Trough of Disillusionment' for Gartner's Hype Cycle. Businesses may not be getting value for money just yet.

Earlier this year, in January, AllthingsD asked the question, “Has Big Data Reached Its Moment of Disillusionment?“. They later repeated that statement in August. Based on the comments on those articles, there are certainly mixed feelings about the value of Big Data.

Both of those articles refer to the Gartner Hype Cycle (see image below), and more specifically to the ‘Trough of Disillusionment’, where “Interest wanes, as the technology fails to deliver on inflated expectations and promises”. And there is evidence that big data has indeed followed Gartner’s model, and is probably approaching the trough.

Now, a new Gartner report entitled “Big Data Adoption in 2013 Shows Substance Behind the Hype” says that 64% of organizations polled have invested or plan to invest in Big Data within the next two years. This is up from 58% last year.

Interestingly, 56% of those polled gave “Determining how to get value from big data” as one of their top three big data challenges. This says to me that businesses want big data, they just don’t know what to do with it.

I still consider big data to be a solution in search of a problem. Adopters have implemented big data analytics hoping for insights, but it’s hard to find something when you don’t know what you’re looking for. The thing is that right now, it’s hard to say what kind of insights big data can bring, and further, what returns would those insights bring. As more products come into the space to drive the prices down, it may then become feasible.

Big data may have real value for Geospatial purposes, or for analyzing large quantities of open data for research or government. But in business, I’m sceptical of its advantages. Business should do a proper ROI before making any investments and not follow the hype.

If indeed big data is following Gartner’s Hype Cycle, then we are already sliding into the trough of disillusionment: we have activity beyond early adopters, and negative press. Next is supposed to come some failures, so look out for that.

Most IT leaders focus on cost-cutting as the way that IT can bring value to the business. However, most executives want to grow the business. Here's 4 ideas that can be used to bring transformational change.

The Information Technology department has often been seen as a cost centre, and sometimes likened to a black hole – where money goes in, but little of value seems to come out. Many CIOs and IT managers have struggled with this view for a while and have few ideas on how to change it.

What many of these IT leaders do wrong is to focus on cost-cutting rather than focus on ways of growing the business. The CEO and other executives are interested in growth and will be more that willing to hear ideas on how IT can help them achieve that goal.

Here are some ideas on how you can help grow the business and, at the same time, bring transform the business.

Seek to grow revenue, not cut costs. Think about how additional revenue can come into the business using IT. Can you help marketing better analyze sales data to improve their efforts? Can adding automated workflows reduce turnaround times from sale to delivery?

Find ways to do more with what you have and not necessarily reducing what you already have. How can you optimize space used? How about increasing the efficiency of the sales team? Using chain management software, one company was able to increase the output of their plant by optimizing orders of raw materials to better utilize the existing storage space.

Introduce e-collaboration throughout the company. Studies have shown that collaboration with both direct and indirect ties improves productivity and innovation in firms. Some companies already have such infrastructure in place, such as Microsoft SharePoint, but fail to utilise the software to its maximum potential, settling for a nice intranet web site rather than a real collaborative platform for Wikis, forums and information sharing.

Increase value to other decision-makers by making data available in a more friendly way. Instead of having reports generated in usual spreadsheets, consider using visuals instead of tables for example, or automate trending to see the ups and downs. Data in a more visualised display is always more easily understood, which explains the popularity with infographics.

This is list is not exhaustive, but it’s just to get you started.

You won’t find success overnight, but formulate a strategy with one goal, perhaps two, and execute the relevant tasks to reach that goal. You will find that IT would be much more valued than before.

ARM designs, though not manufactures, the low-powered processors used by many mobile devices. Their presence has been a disruptive force in the market.

Microsoft had a virtual monopoly on PC operating systems for a long time. Then high-capacity, low-powered microprocessors powering smartphones and tablets came along and became a disruptive force and changing Microsoft’s worldview. Now Microsoft is struggling to change their business and their model to compete in this new world.

Not only Microsoft is impacted though. Intel has much to lose, though not by as much; its low powered Atom processors have not been adopted by the market, except during the very short Netbook boom. AMD saw these signs and has altered its server roadmap to include ARM processors signalling its change from the x86 architecture.

I have over-simplified the overarching details of what had lead to the changes, but you have to admire the effect that disruptive technologies can have, even it has been around for a long time. ARM is no new newcomer (it’s been around since the 1980’s), but has consistently come up with good designs that mobile and smartphone producers have included in their products. ARM read the market well to realise that the mobile, low-power market would have been huge.

Such is the power of vision.
